La Sala - City Hall

The current building, with a neo-Gothic design, was the result of a general renovation carried out between 1885 and 1892 on a previous building that had its origins in the 17th century. The architect Pere d’Alcàntara Penya took charge of the renovation project from 1891. The fact that, both stylistically and structurally, the building responds to neo-Gothic approaches, reaffirms the hypothesis that the intervention of this architect was decisive, since it agrees with the historical trend usually practiced by the Mallorcan master in his buildings, such as the church of Sant Alfons in Felanitx or the church of Sant Felip Neri in Porreres.

The facade, with rigorous symmetry, is structured in three floors that are separated by thin moldings that only break in the central body. In this way, the entrance area is highlighted and the facade is endowed with a certain verticality. On the ground floor, a portico of ansa-paner arches supported by wide pillars and a five-section ribbed vaulted roof, separated by girder arches, stands out.

The entrance to the Hall is made up of a portal with wide voussoirs, which was the old portal of the Can Bordoy manor house, demolished in 1933. On the second floor, on the facade, the large windows framed by fine moldings and protected by water-breaks on culs-de-llàntia with plant decoration stand out. In the central part, the balcony stands out, which highlights the entrance area to the building.

The third floor, of lower height, continues with the same scheme of symmetrical arrangement of the windows and framing of fine moldings. In this case, the windows are smaller and the decoration of the moldings is based on tracery with oculus arches inside. In the central area, above the balcony, the coat of arms of Felanitx is sculpted in relief, which is topped with an attic that breaks the continuity of the roof. This attic presents the same decorative system that is used on the second floor from water breaks and culs-de-llàntia.

Finally, the wide cantilever of the barbican that tops the entire facade and the arrangement of the different pointed arches of the bell tower should be highlighted.
