Descripció
Next to the parish church of Sant Miquel, on the part of Carrer Major, there has been an embankment called Sa Timba since the 16th century. In 1844, on March 31, Palm Sunday, the procession of the twelve sermons or stations of the cross left as usual at five in the evening. The crowd gathered in that area, on the embankment and the street, and, unfortunately, the structure could not bear the weight of all the people and collapsed. 422 people died.
In the same place, a hundred years later, in 1944, the town of Felanitx, with the great help of the sculptor Joan Maimó, erected a commemorative monument in memory of the people who marked the history of Felanitx with their lives.
Death songs and glosses were composed, such as the one attributed to Madò Meravella, which says:
On Palm Sunday in the evening,
Felanitx was sad;
there was no open house
where there was no one dead or wounded.
