Descripció
The current layout of this square is due to a series of urban reforms that were carried out in the 19th century.
The origin of the Plaça de s’Arraval is certainly linked to the presence of water in the subsoil. The existence of a well on this site has been documented since the 15th century. We also have evidence that, in the 18th century, the square was already surrounded by different houses.
After the intervention that was carried out in the 19th century, where the existing wells were covered, the stone obelisk with taps was erected that, today, can be seen in the center of the square. The obelisk, built in 1879, was the work of the master stonemasons Mateu Togores and Rafael Barceló, who followed the typical typological models of the neoclassical style that the architect Isidoro González Velázquez introduced to Mallorca.
In the 20th century, the Plaça de s’Arraval was one of the social and nerve centres of the town and, around it, different casinos and societies were opened, such as the Casino de la Unión, Casino Felanitx or the Cercle Recreatiu.
The majority of the buildings in the square are characterised by having a regionalist style, with a mixture of historicism and localism. We find both buildings that maintain the presence of a differentiated upper floor that follows the model of the traditional porches, as well as others with a greater classical influence where the differentiation of the upper floor disappears.
